He is listed among the world’s leading practitioners for Business Crime Defense since 2013 and has been a contributor to the Lexology report on Investigations 2024.
He is recognized for his expertise in white-collar crime, international assistance in criminal matters, and commercial and banking litigation. He represents clients in asset tracing, money laundering cases, and criminal investigations. Jean-Marc also has significant experience in international commercial arbitration and litigation.
His recent work includes advising and representing clients in complex, multi-jurisdictional financial crime cases and cross-border investigations, and appearing before cantonal and federal prosecution authorities and courts. Recent examples of Jean-Marc Carnicé expertise include representation of high profile individuals whose assets have been frozen in Switzerland in the context of money laundering and corruption investigations; obtaining very significant release of assets for foreign individuals; defending different Middle Eastern clients accused within the context of the Arab Spring; defending plaintiffs, tracing assets and seeking their restitution to victims of frauds; in addition, Jean-Marc has strong links with Spain and Latin America and has on a regular basis represented clients from this part of the world to their entire satisfaction.
Born in 1968, Jean-Marc graduated with a Licentiatus iuris (’92) from the University of Geneva Law School. He then completed an LL.M. in International Legal Studies at New York University.
He was admitted to the Geneva Bar in 1994 and the New York Bar in 1996. He is a member of the Geneva Bar Association and the Swiss Bar Association. He served as Chair of the Geneva Bar Association from 2014 to 2016. His appointment was a true reward for the work he achieved over the years.
Jean-Marc began his career as an associate at Bonnant, Warluzel & Partners, Geneva (1996-2001). He became a founding partner of BCCC Attorneys-at-Law LLC in 2001 and later of BianchiSchwald LLC in 2017, before joining Canonica Valticos Carnicé & Associés with his team in 2024.
In addition to his legal practice, Jean-Marc has been a lecturer at the University of Geneva’s Ecole d’Avocature and a member of the High Council of Geneva’s Judiciary from 2017 to 2023. He has also served on the board of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Services (CCIG). He provides highly specialised criminal law courses within the Swiss Bar Association’s exclusive training programme.
